PPH-10306 Plant Biology

Contents:

The theme is the physiological and genetic plasticity of plants in their response to the abiotic and biotic environment. Starting from an analysis of the plasticity of growth, development and assimilation processes, the responses of plants to abiotic factors, presence of other plants, and presence of microorganisms and herbivore animals will be analysed. Specific themes are plasticity (shoot: root ratio, organ development, allocation and re-allocation of assimilates and minerals, survival, primary and secondary metabolism), abiotic factors (light, temperature, water, atmosphere, nutrients), plant-plant interactions (plant architecture, competition, shade avoidance, allellopathy, hemi-parasites and holoparasites), plant-micro-organisms interactions and plant-animal interactions.

Aims:

The student will acquire insight into the general concepts of plasticity and into the interaction between plants and its environment (both abiotic and biotic), and both in agro-ecosystems and natural ecosystems. The student knows the main laws and mechanisms which form the basis of the behaviour (survival, growth, development and reproduction) of the plant in response to its environment. The student is able to assess the relevance of these reactions in quantitative terms and knows how to interpret these reactions.

Activities:

Basic principles will be taught in lectures. Part of the topics will be dealt with during practicals, laboratory and field studies. Problem oriented seminars and workshops will further develop the analytical skills of the students.

Examination:

Written exam, written reports and assignments.

Literature:

There is a reader for sale during the first sessions of the course.
