Contents:
The principles underlying sustainable organic plant production in both temperate and (sub)tropical areas including: agricultural and horticultural system; societal aspects; and marketing aspects.
Aims:
At the end of the course the student:
- has insight in the functioning of sustainable agro-ecosystems and organic production systems;
- knows the concepts of nutrient and soil health management;
- learn the principles of cultural practices affecting the farm and its environment;
- compare the learned principles to the practice;
- monitor crop growth in an experiment.
Activities:
- lectures;
- problem-directed: case-study in teams of 2-3 students; practicals: monitor crop growth and related ecological factors;
- two excursions.
Examination:
- presentation of group project (30%);
- report of excursions and field experiment (30%);
- final exam (40%).
