In the final year of the MSc MADE programme, students will engage in a living lab project in collaboration with a partner from the AMS network. Over the course of 6 months, students will work in-house at an organisation for part of the week to co-creatively develop a metropolitan solution. As an end result, they deliver an innovative product or process that can help this organisation a step closer to urban sustainability in Amsterdam.
The course challenges the design expertise of the students and allows them to shape a process to their personal learning objectives. As an entrepreneur, researcher or consultant at an organisation, students take part in the design of a metropolitan solution.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to design, facilitate and report upon a process of co-creation that aims at the design of an innovative product, relevant in a real-life, urban setting and contributing to enhanced urban sustainability in the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area.
More specifically, students are expected to be able to:
- iteratively improve and adjust the living lab process and results by continuous evaluation and incorporating feedback;
- articulate how their living lab process relates to state of the art theories;
- collaborate with societal actors from the Amsterdam metropolitan region, e.g. companies, NGOs, or a governmental bodies;
- present their project results to enable exchange of knowledge, experience and ideas with other MADE staff, students and relevant stakeholders in the city;
- propose an effective way to replicate and/or scale the innovative design and process in other relevant contexts.
- Take part in several input sessions, tutorials and workshops to get familiar with the living lab concept and collect tools for shaping a living lab process.
- Formulate individual conditions of living lab project in an expression of interest.
- Prepare a living lab plan including.
- In addition the living lab plan also contains individual learning objectives of the students that take part in the living lab.
- Depending on the living lab plan, the student group designs a product. Students develop activities in collaboration with their case-owner and other relevant stakeholders
- Experts provide additional guidance in input sessions at AMS Institute. These sessions are on demand and organised depending on the needs that arise from the living lab.
- During the kick-off stage peer-groups are formed. During the in-context period these groups come together at AMS Institute regularly for peer review sessions (intervisie).
- Present results in an intermediary review.
- Reflect on the individual learning process in a reflection paper that relates back to the learning objectives formulated in the kick-off stage.
- Describe, interpret and reflect on the process and the product in the lab report.
- Organise an exhibition where the living lab results are presented and explained to a larger audience.
- Organise a workshop that is based on cross cutting themes from the various living lab projects.
Students will be assessed on their Living lab plan (25%), product (25%) and the final Living Lab report (50%). More details on the assessment can be found in the courseguide.
