Note: This course can not be combined in an individual programme with FHM-22806 Food Hazards.
Introductory course on basic principles in toxicology, organ-specific toxic effects and risk assessment.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- summarize important generalized toxicological (biochemical) mechanisms underlying toxic responses following exposure to toxic chemicals,
- interpret the consequences of physiological processes on toxic responses in the human body,
- apply some important mechanisms (modes of action) of toxic chemicals that underlie the adverse effects observed to important toxic chemicals in food and the environment,
- argue which approaches (in the field of alternative integrated testing strategies) are needed to replace the animal testing in the field of toxicological safety or risk assessment of chemicals,
- recall what type of data is required by regulatory bodies for the safety assessment of chemicals,
- design and execute a comprehensive toxicological concentration-response experiment and critically report and discus the results,
- apply the basic principles of risk assessment of chemicals in food and the environment.
Series of lectures (18), a self-study assignment and three practical assignments. The self-study assignment will guide you through a risk assessment of a food contaminant (Acrylamide), and will increase you skill on how to apply basic toxicological principles in the daily practice of risk assessment. By the practical assignments you will learn to perform laboratory experiments that are frequently used within experimental toxicology for the hazard identification of a chemical. You will work with a fellow student on the experiments (we will make the groups). Next to that you will analyse a more complex toxicological test looking at the developmental toxicity of two compounds. For this a virtual practical is designed in which you will evaluate results obtained using a zebrafish embryo test. Presence is obligatory for the practical course, and is strongly recommended for the lectures.
The assessment will be based on the following outcomes:
- exam: In this exam the theoretical base of general toxicology will be assessed, using a written exam. The written exam contains closed and some open questions. It contributes for 80% for the overall grade, the final mark of the exam has to be at least 5.5.
- practical: For two experimental parts of the practical, students have to write brief reports, based on the obtained results. These reports will be assessed. The overall final mark of the practical has to be at least 5.5 (and contributes 20% to the final grade). The theoretical exam contain questions related to the experiments.
- The practical assignment includes a virtual practical on the Zebrafish embryo test. The theoretical exam contain questions related to the virtual practical
- The risk assessment tutorial itself will not be graded, but the theoretical exam might contain questions related to the content in the tutorial.
