Basic knowledge on plant physiology, plant cell biology, and genetics, as taught in: GEN-11806 Fundamentals of Genetics and Molecular Biology; CLB-10803 Reproduction of Plants; PPH-10806 Structure and Function of Plants or equivalent courses.
Assumed knowledge will be tested with a digital assessment at the start of the course. This assessment will not affect your final mark.

The aim of this course is to provide a thorough understanding of theoretical and practical aspects of plant cell and tissue culture. Topics include: plant regeneration, genetic modification, cellular & physiological aspects of differentiation and hormonal regulation of differentiation. There is a focus on the practical wet lab application of the studied techniques in both academic and industrial research.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- grow, maintain and manipulate plant material in a laboratory setting for research and breeding purposes;
- explain and discuss the requirements for in vitro plant growth regarding plant hormones and nutrients;
- explain and discuss the (molecular) pathways that drive organogenesis and embryogenesis of plants;
- apply in vitro plant transformation techniques and explain and discuss the consequences of plant transformation and other cell and tissue culture techniques on the genetic state of the plant material; 
- carry out and interpret a range of common subcellular stainings to evaluate (in vitro grown) plant materials using bright field and fluorescent microscopy;
- find, read, understand, integrate and discuss literature in the field of plant cell and tissue culture;
- explain and discuss the use of cell biological, genetic and physiological techniques in fundamental and applied plant tissue culture research.
- design, carry out, interpret and present an original experiment in the field of plant cell and tissue culture.
- find the best way to present data and give feedback to peers in a symposium setting. 


Theoretical aspects will be taught during lectures and by studying and discussing recent research papers. A large part of the course will be devoted to practical work. Besides 'standard' experiments, students will design, set up and carry out their own new experiment. Guest lectures will give insights in the application of the learned techniques in fundamental and applied sciences. Online IT modules with assessments will support self-study of the course content.
