Thesis Nutrition, Metabolism and Genomics
This course provides an in depth coverage of the applications of genomics technologies, focusing on the relevant examples of complex diseases relating to nutrition such as obesity, diabetes or metabolic syndrome. The students will be trained to dissect complex scientific problems in nutritional research into smaller feasible subprojects that can be studied efficiently with genomics tools. In addition, the impact of sensitizing genotypes for the understanding of complex diseases, the design of dietary intervention studies for Nutrigenomics applications, the concept of challenge tests and early biomarkers, the impact of bioinformatics and data mining and potential future application such as personalized nutrition will be addressed.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- describe the basics of genetics, genomics and gene regulation with relation to diet;
- interpret and use the literature in the field of nutrigenomics;
- implement genomic technologies such as transcriptomics, proteomics, (epi)genetics, microbioom and metabolomics in a nutrition research protocol;
- understand and describe the concepts of molecular nutrition research and nutrigenomics;
- describe and identify strengths and pitfalls of applying Nutrigenomic tools;
- identify the best method for answering specific nutrigenomic related research questions;
- analyse basic genomics data derived from nutrition studies (microarrays, bioinformatics, biostatistics, pathway reconstruction programs);
- design a human or animal study in which –omic techniques are applied;
- write and defend your own research proposal (team of students);
- review research proposals of other students and give constructive feedback.
To reach these objectives, the student will:
- follow lectures;
- apply background from lectures to answer research questions and identify possible problems in projects;
- write a nutrigenomics project proposal in a team effort;
- search the literature and read and discuss relevant original research papers (group work);
- present and defend the project proposal (group work);
- analyse genomics data and present data in appropriate graphs (heatmap,pathway analysis,...) and answer questions;
- discuss ideas and concepts with other students and coaches/teachers;
- use the Brightspace site.
- written exam: largely open and a few closed question (60% only at first exam in May - thereafter 100%);
- quality and presentation project proposal (group) (40% only at first exam in May);
- presence and participation practical.
