This course broadens the knowledge and skills offered by the courses GRS-10306 and GRS-10806 into two main avenues: geo-visualisation and networks. We offer these avenues because nowadays webservices and apps strongly rely on different types of visualisation like augmented reality and on network concepts like navigation. Most of the times these interfaces are based on, and linked to multi modal geodata and open geodata processing sources. The course extrapolates the basic concepts of cartography into geodata visualisation, a loosely bounded domain that integrates different forms of geo-data visualisation which may be useful for thematic mapping, landscape visualisation, story maps and mixed reality. To be able to do so the course introduces visualisation concepts like thematic mapping, 3-dimensional visualisation, geo-data animation and story-telling. The second avenue, network construction and analysis, shows graph theory as the fundamental of network construction and analysis. Networks are of great importance as spatial reference and as concept to study navigation, route planning, accessibility and reach items. The course integrates both avenues by options to publish geo-information by web sites, apps and social media. In research practice as in business these open source options are of equal importance as the proprietary software tools and data sets especially in the field of App development. That's why in this course open source data and tools that support visualisation and network studies will be given attention too.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- recall the variety of geo-visualisations in relation to societal and research interest;
- practice geo-visualisation of single and multiple datasets; 
- transform visualisation results into web enabled information;
- understand the network data model;
- apply different types of network analysis;
- exemplify and discuss current applications of geodata visualisation and/or networks in the context of privacy and ethics.


The course is strongly based on the blended learning concept. Besides there are (guest)lectures and feedback sessions. The concepts of geo-visualisation, network construction and analysis are practiced by different assignments making use of proprietary and open software tools.
