Assumed knowledge on:

This course is, in principle, taught only as an integral part of other existing courses that belong to a specific study programme. Only students with deficiencies in the area of scientific writing can take this course in consultation with the course coordinator.

This course teaches students how to write a scientific paper from the information gathered by literature study or empirical research. When this course is taught as part of another course, the exact content of the lecture(s) is tailored to the existing course, depending on the level and the type of writing product the students write in the course. During one or more lectures, we cover some or all the following topics: the writing process; structure and components of a paper; writing style; tables and figures; and the use of external sources, including referencing.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand the steps in the writing process and be able to follow these steps in their own writing assignments;
- understand how to structure information in a scientific paper;
- understand the characteristics of a scientific writing style and be able to apply this in their own writing;
- use figures and tables in an optimal way in their writing;
- correctly use and cite external sources.

- instruction and activities;
- writing practice;
- feedback on the students' own writing.

The students write a paper based on literature or collected data.
The students will be assessed on the writing quality of their papers, determined through a criteria list.

Course material will be provided through Brightspace.
