Biobased and/or Circular economy, as this is a deepening course
ORL-32306 Biobased Logistics;
ORL-32806 Sustainability Analysis.
To familiarize the student with the commercial and transformational aspects of Biobased & Circular Economy, the course comprises of (guest) lectures, literature, case studies, an exam, and work on a factpod-video. Ever thought about the circular processing of over 1 mln matrasses anually, in the Netherlands alone? How to profitably extract biochemicals and ingredients from waste? Gain and develop knowledge to understand, strengthen and work in this economy under transition. lectures and (student-facilitated) discussions are focused on 1) business and societal views on the topic; 2) strategic niche management and sector transitions, like agriculture, packaging and chemistry; 3) managing biobased and circular value chains; 4) firm-level new business models; 5) and local/small vs large scale bio-refineries, around the world. Guest lectures (conditional on enough enrollment) bring the up-to-date information on new business development, and the huge hurdles for real, impact full transitions. Dedicated knowledge clips to level students knowledge base are available. Individually creating a socalled Fact-pod is there both to internalize the understanding, and add knowledge to this domain.
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- identify the characteristics of relevant topics and terms;
- recognize the time-related prospects and challenges for firms, industries and global regions;
- understand societal transition principles, and Bioeconomy & CE-policies;
- understand the issues at the different system levels, using strategic niche management;
- understand how to develop new business, e.g. biorefineries, circular cascades, and B-corps;
- get a feel of how business models, strategic management, finance and network theory, may inform us on the topic;
- demonstrate your creativity by the use of new business development, and business models for Biobased & Circular Business.
