The MSc programme Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management trains academic professionals in the field of the sustainable use, conservation and restauration of marine and aquatic ecosystems and resources, by combining ecological technological and socio-economic approaches. Oceans, seas, estuaries, rivers and lakes play a major role in feeding the world, but also provide numerous other goods and services. To ensure continued use of the world's marine regions and aquatic ecosystems and resources, integrated and interdisciplinary strategies towards sustainability are needed. Following an interdisciplinary common part, students specialize in one of three following fields:
This specialisation deals with the culture of all types of aquatic organisms (such as finfish, shrimp, shellfish, corals, sponges and algae) in a wide range of culture conditions (from sea enclosures to semi-extensive ponds, high-tech on-land recirculation systems, and integrated multi-trophic aquaculture). The technical skills required for maintaining a healty production environment are combined with the soci-econimic aspects relevant for aquaculture activities. Students gain in-depth knowledge and skills on biology and physiology of aquatic organismss and develop skills in aquaculture system management.
b) Marine Resources and Ecology
This specialization focuses on the funtioning of marine and aquatic communities in relation to human interventions, including fisheries, habitat destruction and climate change. Sustainable management of marine living resources includes the development of models of ecological interactions, population dynamics and fishery yield, international regulations, management tools, and the economics of resource use. Students study how these models are used and learn to apply them, developing insight in ecosystem engineering for coastal protection and the ecological processes that form the basis for marine food webs and their use.
c) Marine Governance
This specialization will give students the analytical skills and tools they need to understand marine governance and propose innovative solutions for an effective and legitimate decision making process. This specialization focuses on social, economic and political processes of the use and management of marine resources. Students become proficient in the functioning of national and international public institutions, including the European Union and United Nations, and a range of new private governance instruments, such as Eco-certification and environmental credits.
After successful completion of this MSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- integrate knowledge of technological, physiological, ecological, economic and social aspects of the use of aquatic organisms and marine ecosystems;
- analyse critically the social and ecological dynamics of the utilisation of marine resources, and the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems;
- compare different stakeholder views on socio-ecological aspects of marine ecosystems and aquatic production systems;
- assess the ethical and societal consequences of production of aquatic organisms and use of marine ecosystems, define dilemmas and design possible solutions;
- design a research plan in which the problem definition, hypothesis, research objectives and research questions are described in relation to relevant literature;
- apply appropriate research methods and techniques, including gathering new information and integrating this in existing theories in order to test scientific hypotheses by gathering new information and by integrating this in existing theories;
- co-operate in an interdisciplinary and international team to perform project-based work;
- communicate clearly (verbally and in writing) about the results of project and research work with specialists and non-specialists considering the nature of the target group;
- reflect upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning, both individually and in discussions with others and design and plan their own study path.
