Contents:

This course will on the one hand present and discuss advanced experimental methods that make use of light to study biological processes and on the other hand present and explain the physical aspects of light usage in biology. Strong emphasis will be put on the study of the molecular, (bio)physical aspects of photosynthesis.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- answer in-depth questions and solve exercises and problems regarding the light reactions in photosynthesis and the methods that can be used to study them.
- describe in detail how to perform state-of-the-art biophotonics measurements on the light reactions and to analyze and interpret experimental outcomes.
- report accurately about performed research both orally and in written form.
- study, summarize, present and discuss state-of-the-art literature in the field.

Activities:

- lectures;
- individual essay. Each participant delivers a short report
- problem solving and doing exercises;
- laboratory experiments in small groups and presenting the results both in a written way and orally.

Examination:

- written exam about the light reactions in photosynthesis and the techniques to study them (35%);
- performance in lab experiments and analysis of the results (20%);
- oral and written presentation of experimental results and their analysis (20%);
- written report about a literature project (25%);
- each component needs a minimum mark of 5.0 to pass but the final overall average needs a 5.50 to pass;
- partial results remain valid during the same study year and the year after.

Literature:

Required literature will be provided via Brightspace.
