GEO-31806 Leisure, Tourism and Environment: Sustainable Development.

Contents:

Tourism is highly dependent on the physical environment and a wide range of natural resources, including landscapes, water, climate, wildlife and food. Many of these resources are under pressure from multiple factors, including population growth, climate change and tourism itself. This course focuses on the various ways in which tourism and natural resources relate, and evaluates the effectiveness of contemporary institutional arrangements of state, market and civil society, aimed at improving tourism-environment relationships.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand tourism's relation with a wide range of environmental settings and resources;
- systematically analyse tourism-resource governance arrangements using relevant theoretical perspectives , including networks and flows, social practices, informational governance;
- appreciate and apply cutting edge and relevant social science methodologies, including serious gaming and agent-based modelling;
- carry out an individual study into tourism-resource relations and governance arrangements and write a paper.

Activities:

Lectures, tutorials, practical assignments, an excursion and individual paper writing.

Examination:

- written test with open questions (50%);
- individual paper (50%)
Each component needs a minimum mark of 5.5 to pass.

Literature:

Selection of articles and book chapters.
