Contents:

This course gives an overview and insight in animal feed ingredients, in feed additives and thus this course is giving preconditions in feed formulation. The course covers linear programming techniques and discusses conflicts of interest between persons involved in formulation such as purchasers, nutritionists, production directors, quality managers and sales directors.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- recognise the principles of feed formulation and its preconditions;
- to apply simple and sophisticated linear programming techniques in formulating animal feeds/foods;
- interpret deviations (natural variation; analytical errors) in nutrient content and/or digestibility of feed ingredients with respect to its feeding value;
- demonstrate knowledge on feed additives in feeds for pigs, poultry, ruminants, fish and pets with respect to legislation and their working mechanisms;
- demonstrate knowledge of (main) groups of ingredients, including nutrient contents, animal feeding values and safety aspects for animals.

Activities:

Lectures with case studies and associated ppt hand-outs provide students with pertinent knowledge. In tutorials, exercises will be used to give an opportunity to students for self-learning: students will prepare their own 'ingredient matrix', an 'additive compendium' and will use different techniques in feed formulation. Computer practicals (linear programming) and a real industry-orientated final week (formulation aspects in practice and conflicts of interest) show their contribution to theory and desk studies.

Examination:

- written exam about lecturing notes & case studies (75%);
- practical linear programming (15%) and ingredient matrix (10%);
For all these parts a minimal grade of 5.0 is required.
