Assumed knowledge on:

LAR-22806 Landscape Architecture Theory and Aesthetics; GRS-10806 Introduction Geo-information Science and Graphics; LAR-25303 Free-hand and Digital Visualization 1.

Continuation courses:

LAR-28306 Studio Urban Design.

Contents:

This course offers advanced drawing knowledge and techniques exercises for BSc students of Landscape Architecture.
The Freehand part deals with more complex objects and spatial composition of landscape and urban environment. Bird's eye views and eye-level views are practiced from observation, as analytical scheme and as design sketch, emphasizing projection, form and dimension, detail and plane texture up to scale level, and colour articulation. The language for freehand is the same as for digital drawing. The digital part includes tutorial courses in SketchUp software for 3D vector drawing, and for finishing techniques and manipulations of photographs and drawn design visualization (Adobe CS5).
All spatial visualization types are to be applied instantly in the connected and parallel Studio Urban Design LAR-28306, with further attention for attractive and clarifying presentation posters, summarizing an adequate selection of studio project research and design results. The last part of the drawing-education is a week of training in sketching and documentation in a specific landscape (e.g. South Limburg), reducing it by analysis into typological drawings and visualizations, using various orthographic and spatial projections.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- demonstrate advanced skills of freehand sketching for field observation and design on different scale levels;
- apply SketchUp software for 3D vector drawing and Photoshop for different finishing techniques and photographic manipulations;
- present design proposals in clarifying and attractive digital posters;
- decide what type of drawing and technique is relevant for a given design scale and objective.

Activities:

- lectures, literature study;
- drawing lessons; instructed and assisted software tutorial exercises;
- advanced exercises in layout and color;
- fieldtrip Landscape Visualization.

Examination:

- complete sketchbook results;
- completed computer drawing exercises;
- applied drawing and poster layout in Studio Urban Design (LAR 26309);
- sketch week results.
