Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

LAR-22806 Landscape Architecture Theory and Aesthetics; GRS-10806 Introduction Geo-information Science and Graphics.

Continuation courses:

LAR-27806 Free-hand and Digital Visualization 2; LAR-28306 Design Studio 3: Urban Design.

Contents:

The course offers basic drawing knowledge, discipline and technique-exercises for BSc students of Landscape Architecture.
Sketches, diagrams, plan- and section drawings, impressions and technical details describe the structure, the visual experience and technical aspects of a design project in various drawing projections and scale levels. Design drawings are at first: language and not until then: artistic. They should tell the various aspects and qualities of a design precisely in an attractive way.
In the Freehand part, objects and phenomenon's are to be translated from observation into codification from memory, emphasizing projection and scale, linear code, form and dimension, plane texture and color articulation. The language for freehand is the same as for digital drawing. Digital drawing exercises (AutoCAD, Adobe CS) for design delineation and basic visualization are to be applied instantly in the connected parallel course Planting & Construction LAR-24803.
Finally, we will learn and apply some basics of layout in attractive and clarifying presentation posters, summarizing an adequate selection of research and design results of the connected and parallel Studio Site Design (LAR-25806). Further development by repeated application in following design studios.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- apply basic drawing techniques: design sketches in different levels of scale and detail, in plans, cross sections and schematic illustrations;
- apply CAD software for 2D vector drawing and Raster software (AutoCAD, Illustrator, Photoshop, e.g.) for various finishing techniques;
- understand the relationship between design products and their appropriate type of sketch, drawing or scheme;
- present design proposals in both attractive and clarifying posters.

Activities:

- lectures, literature study;
- supervised lessons in freehand drawing, layout and colour;
- instructed and assisted software tutorial exercises.

Examination:

- sketch book results;
- results of the computer drawing exercises;
- applied drawing and posters in Studio Site Design;
- the intermediate scores form 15 % of the final assessment.
