MSc Biobased Sciences


The world is moving from using fossil resources to sustainable biobased resources. In this new world, it’s critical to determine if alternative biobased resources have the potential to become truly sustainable and economically viable. For companies in this industry, it’s important to know the challenges that lie ahead. This MicroMasters programme is intended for those currently working in the energy, chemical and biotech industries. It will focus on the use of chemical and biotechnological approaches for the production of energy-carriers, polymers, chemical building blocks and materials from renewable resources and waste streams.The content of this micromaster is covered by campus courses of the master biobased sciences. The micromaster cannot be combined with those courses. Students enrolled at Wageningen University follow the campus version. The micromaster exist in a 24 ECTS version and a 18 ECTS version. The 24 ECTS version contains 5 MOOCs and a final capstone while the 18 ECTS version contains 4 MOOCS including the capstone.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of the 18 credits version of the micromaster graduates are able to:
- understand the challenges of switching from a fossil fuel based economy to a biobased economy;
- understand how to identify suitable raw materials and create valuable new products;
- learn how to refine biomass without damaging its valuable components;
- perform a functional analysis of potential methods that can be used for refining a resource;
- learn how to efficiently convert biobased feedstocks into desired products


Follow online 4 MOOC's on a. Biorefinery: from biomass to building blocks of biobased products; b. catalytic conversions for biobased chemicals and products; c. From Fossil Resources to Biomass: a buisness and economic perspective; and complete a capstone project (Capstone chemistry and technology for sustainability).


Digital interim examination at the end of each MOOC (pass) and report, presentation and final oral examination (MOOC's must be passed) at the end of the capstone project. All parts have to be passed. The final mark is the average of the marks for the capstone report, presentation and oral examination.
