Biosystems Engineering (BAT) / BSc


Biosystems Engineering is a multi-disciplinary academic programme that fulfils the needs of mankind in terms of sustainable food, feed, fuels, fibres and chemicals. The Biosystems Engineering bachelor programme prepares students to address aspects of the question “How to sustainably feed 10 billion people in 2050?”.
Knowing how a system behaves and performs is based on models; this requires a solid foundation in mathematics, statistics and physics. From day one students learn to adopt systems thinking: they learn to identify the different functions in a biosystem as well as the engineering aspects of technology that fulfil these functions. Systems engineering, sensing, data collection and (statistical) data analysis, modelling, control and information engineering form the engineering basis. Solutions should also meet the needs of society. Students therefore acquire a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the interaction between technology and society or economics. Biosystems Engineering addresses challenges arising in systems or a chain of systems containing living organisms and products that are perishable, ripening and subject to decay. So it investigates, develops and combines knowledge and methods from technical sciences with biological, environmental, agricultural and social sciences. To address such complex problems teamwork is necessary. Therefore students learn how to work in teams and to communicate effectively.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this BSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- understand the biology and chemistry of a biosystem, which can be controlled or affected by technological solutions;
- understand the position and interaction of stakeholders in a biosystem with technology, society, and economics;
- apply knowledge and methods from mathematics, statistics, informatics and physics in cases related to biosystems engineering;
- apply programming, measuring, and quantitative modelling techniques;
- gather and interpret data and methods in the field of biosystems engineering for sensing,  control, and management of biosystems;
- asses design and evaluation method of innovative solutions for a biosystem with respect to a requirements set;
- apply procedural knowledge, including the main phases of a scientific research or design process, by writing a research plan and carrying out this research plan or making a design for a biosystems engineering related problem;
- work adequately in a team of students on a pre-defined biosystems engineering related case;
- communicate orally and in writing ideas to both specialist and non-specialist audiences in Dutch, and in English where relevant.
