Biotechnology (BBT) / BSc

Profile

The BSc programme Biotechnology focuses on application-oriented integration of biological disciplines and process engineering. Cells, enzymes or tissues are used for analytical or production aims.
Integration of genetics, (bio-)chemistry, microbiology, cell and molecular biology as well as process technology (including process engineering and design) yields a powerful concept for the development of sustainable bio catalytic production processes.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this BSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- apply and integrate basic theoretical knowledge of biotechnological key disciplines physical chemistry, organic chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, process technology, molecular and cellular biology and genetics;
- explain an entire biotechnological product or production process including the consequences of changes in biological, chemical or technological parameters on the biotechnological product or production process;
- apply laboratory techniques, analytical measurements, mathematical, computational and statistical methods in biotechnological-oriented cases;
- resolve (under supervision) a pre-defined biotechnological research question, development or design problem into verifiable research or design questions;
- develop (under supervision) a research plan in which research question, hypothesis, experimental set-up and data analysis are described in relation to relevant literature;
- execute (under supervision) simple scientific experiments, test the hypothesis and analyse and interpret own experimental data and data presented in literature and on internet, in order to develop new (biotechnological) knowledge, product or process;
- demonstrate an academic attitude by generating and recognizing creative ideas and recognizing limits of scientific knowledge;
- communicate verbally and in writing about results of learning or experiments;
- co-operate in a multi-disciplinary team on a pre-defined biotechnological-oriented research question, design or development problem;
- judge (under supervision) technological, ethical, societal and economic consequences of biological, chemical and technological changes in the design of a biotechnological product or production process;
- reflect (under supervision) upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning, both individually and in discussions with others and design and plan their own learning path.
