BSc Minor Landscape Architecture (WULAR) / BSc

Profile

The BSc minor Landscape Architecture offers students in environmental sciences and life sciences the opportunity to get acquainted with landscape architecture knowledge and practice.
Landscape architecture is about understanding the landscape and designing, representing and constructing landscape transformations. As a landscape architect you address both human and ecological needs by designing solutions that are functional, sustainable and aesthetically appealing. To achieve these goals it is essential to implement (area-specific) landscape knowledge and to show your creativity in discovering and revealing the beauty of the landscape in your design. The design process entails a combination of (landscape) analysis, conceptual thinking and giving form. The combination of required skills in the design process results in a minor with four different type of courses.
This minor entails three courses taught by the landscape architecture chair group and one restricted optional course. You start the minor immediately with a design assignment for a specific site within Studio Site Design (LAR-25806). The parallel course Landscape Engineering (LAR-24306) supports you with knowledge on technical landscape interventions. Your knowledge on planting and construction as well as your free-hand drawing skills and digital visualization techniques will be further developed in the course Planting, Construction and Representation 1 (LAR-29806). You choose one or both of the restricted optional courses Human Geography (GEO-10306) / Landscape Economics and Politics (AEP-22306) to broaden your knowledge about specific processes that take place within the landscape.
This BSc minor is a programme minor.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this minor students are expected to be able to:
- have the creativity and power of imagination to generate and represent future landscapes and their impact on society;
- assess (technical) possibilities and restrictions for deliberate human interventions in landscapes;
- recall the comprehensive spatial and ecological qualities of a selection of trees, shrubs, hedges, perennials and bulbs;
- understand the relationship between design products and their appropriate type of sketch, drawing or scheme;
- apply software for 2D vector drawing (e.g. AutoCAD, Illustrator) and Raster software ( e.g. Photoshop) for various design purposes.
