This course offers an overview of environmental law and policy from a global perspective. After a general introduction on environmental law and policy, institutional aspects - what bodies are involved on international, European and national level - and the relations between national and international law, the course focuses on the key concepts of environmental law, and the question whether these key concepts are transformed into legally binding standards. The second part of the course offers specific insight in several environmental issues and the law related to these issues, such as: climate change, water management, biodiversity, waste management, WTO law, dangerous substances, etc. These issues are reviewed by international treaties, European directives and regulations. National and international case law will be considered as well.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- identify the main regulatory challenges and key concepts of environmental law from a global perspective;
- explain that law can perform quite different roles in protecting the environment;
- apply the key concepts on lower regulatory systems, in daily life and research;
- analyse different regulatory goals according to their effectiveness for environmental protection within the framework of global environmental law;
- criticize regulatory approaches to environmental problems;
- compose solutions for regulatory problems in the area of environmental law from a global perspective.

- participate in discussions about the possibilities and impossibilities of environmental law.

Multiple-choice exam (100%).
