Continuation courses:

LAR-25806 Studio Site Design

Contents:

This course introduces the basic principles of landscape design as a space and order creating discipline. In lectures and multiple exercises the students will be engaged with basic competences of design analysis and design creativity. Part of the studio includes the use of a particular set of analytical questions to study a given amount of (historical) design references (garden, park and regional scale). These references are needed to become familiar with the development of design style, compositional elements and strategies to include landscape and societal characteristics. Another part of the studio will provide a small amount of relatively fast design challenges to familiarize students with the creative process of landscape design.
As a collective part of both Studio Planning Basics and Studio Design Basics, the students will write a position paper to support the students' choice for either the major landscape architecture or spatial planning. In this paper students will reflect on their personal competencies and attitude in the context of scientific and professional competences of spatial planners and landscape architects.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- compare three international historic architectural styles;
- apply a narrative design method according to the three architectural styles;
- elaborate a given model into designs for a medium sized study area;
- apply first level visualisation techniques;
- reflect on differences between planning and design methods and the personal competencies regarding planning and design.

Activities:

The exercises alternate between individual and group assignments and the use of graphical techniques, object movement and 1:1 building and testing models. Students must collect a series of photographs and sketches that document their exercise results and development. This data will be used to illustrate the written exam questions, relating to the theoretical components provided by the lectures.
List of exercises, see schedule of the course.

Examination:

The examination consists of a design project that consists of a graphical representation of the existing landscape (defended orally), interpreted opportunities for design interventions and a convincing proposal for additional value by means of a new estate (scale 1:10.000 to 1:100). The final mark is based on the landscape analysis (poster and defence) (30%), landscape design (poster) (45%), oral defence (15%) and performance during studio work (10%).

Literature:

A set of 30x3 design references (repertoire knowledge), selected by the course examiners.
