Note: The BSc minor Food, Intestial Homeostasis and Disease should be followed simultaneously with this course
This course consists of lectures that illustrate the conceptual connection between the different courses that build up this minor. Examples will be shown to integrate the knowledge obtained and thereby better understand how complicated interactions between food, intestinal microbiota and barrier function and resulting immune reactivity contribute to health and the (potential) development of disease.
Learning outcomes:
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- integrate the concepts provided by the four minor courses into a blended understanding of the interplay between food, microbiota and immune health.
Activities:
Lectures by the minor coordinator integrate the formulated learning outcomes of the minor by discussing various examples where food components influence immune-mediated inflammatory diseases, but also disease resistance.
Examination:
Written examination will consist of selected literature with questions explaining how selected food components affect gastrointestinal homeostasis, gut barrier function, gut microbiota and immune activity both locally and systemically in such a way as thereby affecting overall health of the individual.
Literature:
Examples will be provided by discussing selected literature references.
