Biotechnology (MBT) / MSc

Profile

Biotechnology is defined as industrial exploitation of living organisms or exploitation of components derived from these organisms. The MSc programme Biotechnology focuses on application oriented integration of biological disciplines and engineering. Students have to specialize in one field of biotechnology (Cellular / Molecular Biotechnology, Food Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, Process Technology, Marine Biotechnology or Environmental and Biobased Technology) and apply their knowledge and skills in an integrated approach including other fields and disciplines.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this MSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- select, understand and integrate skills in basic and applied disciplines of biotechnology;
- apply advanced knowledge of own specialization;
- design a new biotechnological product or process by applying knowledge of the biotechnological key disciplines in an integrated approach;
- develop a research plan in which research question, hypothesis, experimental set-up and data analysis are described in relation to relevant literature;
- execute experiments, test hypothesis and analyse and interpret own experimental data and/or data presented in literature and on internet, in order to meet the objectives of the biotechnological research and development project;
- design a new biotechnological product or process that meets the objectives and demands of an interested party;
- demonstrate an academic attitude by:
a. generating creative ideas;
b. recognizing the limits of scientific knowledge;
c. reason logically and abstractly in discussions with both experts and laymen;
- communicate verbally and in writing about the results of learning, experiments and project work with colleagues and non-colleagues;
- co-operate in a multi-disciplinary team (including planning activities, taking responsibilities and motivating co-workers) on a biotechnological-oriented research question, design or development problem;
- judge technological, ethical, societal and economic consequences of biological, chemical and technological changes in the design of a biotechnological product or production process;
- reflect upon personal knowledge, skills, attitudes and functioning, both individually and in discussions with others (including the interested party and experts) and design and plan their own learning path.
