Language of instruction:

Contents:

This course introduces students to key principles of plant breeding. Different subjects are the importance of the mode of reproduction of crops and the genetic consequences for selection. Various selection methods are discussed. For an effective selection programme it is imperative to distinguish genotype from phenotype, since only the genotypic differences are relevant to genetically improve the crop. The application of molecular markers is an important tool to make breeding programmes more efficient.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- explain basic concepts and principles in plant breeding;
- explain the process of domestication and germplasm development;
- understand and reflect on plant resistance to biotic factors;
- explain and discuss the principles of breeders' rights and patents;
- understand how seed production programs are designed;
- understand the concepts of genetic markers and how they are applied in plant breeding;
- analyse genetic segregations, including cases where genetic linkage occurs;
- analyse observations to separate genetic and non-genetic components of variation.

Activities:

The course consists of a number of self-study e-learning modules that explain and illustrate the principles, and give numerous exercises to the student to test his understanding. Automated feedback on correct and wrong answers is given. The lecturer is available during question hours and at the discussion forum.

Examination:

Written test with 10-15 open questions (100% of the final mark).

Literature:

In principle, all of the information is in the e-modules, so an extra study book is not necessary.
For background information and a different explanation of the material we recommend the following book:
