Contents:

This course gives students a thorough introduction into the art of spatial planning. Students will learn what spatial planning is about and they will be introduced into the Dutch context of spatial planning. The course pays attention to the role of governmental organizations and to the different roles spatial planners play. The course includes a practical assignment during which the students will develop skills to make plans and to facilitate planning processes. Reflection is another important aspect of the course. The students will have to reflect upon their personal action, thinking and attitude during the assignment. They will learn to reflect on the different tools and methods they used and they will have to elaborate on how the skills they have developed are useful in planning practices.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- define key concepts of spatial planning;
- analyse specific planning practices in a simple real life planning project;
- compare different basic planning methods in the Netherlands and abroad;
- clarify the institutional and political context of spatial planning in the Netherlands and explain what makes this context specific in comparison to other countries;
- invent a strategy for the facilitation of a simple real life planning project;
- demonstrate concise writing on an individual level;
- evaluate personal action and thinking;
- work together in a team.

Activities:

- lectures;
- practical assignment excursion;
- reflection on personal action;
- thinking and attitude;
- study of selected literature.

Examination:

The final grade will be calculated based upon three parts:
- planning assignment (50%);
- written exam (25%);
- reflection assignment (25%).
This grade will only be given after each part is assessed with at least a 5.5. If the project proposal or the reflection assignment are assessed with lower than 5.5 the student is offered one opportunity to improve the assignment. If this improvement is not sufficient the course has to be redone the next year. Grades for the different parts, also grades for the parts that were sufficient, remain valid till the end of the academic year in which the course is taken. If the course is not finished by then these grades expire and an insufficient mark will be reported. The planning assignment needs to be done in a group. The group is responsible for a sufficient participation of each group member. If there are however reasons to distinguish between group member the group should consult the teachers as soon as possible.
