Contents:

In the Master Atelier Landscape Architecture and Planning students with a study background in landscape architecture, spatial planning, socio-spatial analysis or any other field that is related to landscape architecture and planning (e.g. regional economics, nature conservation, environmental studies, landscape ecology, hydrology, soil sciences) work together in a multidisciplinary team to carry out a design research and planning/design project for a client. The project has a yearly changing meta-subject that forms the umbrella under which several ateliers will run integrally. The project is guided by a knowledge network of scientists from various disciplines at Wageningen University and other scientific institutions. The network inspires the students by giving seminars, supervises students during the entire project and assesses the academic legitimacy of intermediate and final planning- and design proposals in terms of research-by-design. The design projects will be linked to international research initiatives and student exchange programs on landscape architecture and planning in order to benefit from international experience exchange.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- determine, with a multi-disciplinary team and in interaction with a client the goals of a project and formulate tasks and a project plan on the basis of their disciplinary competencies;
- translate a vaguely formulated planning or design problem of a client into a sound academic project proposal which can be executed in a limited amount of time;
- apply substantial international scientific knowledge and experience in practical planning and design research;
- develop logical, aesthetically appealing and original planning and design proposals on different scale levels;
- evaluate alternative intermediate planning and design proposals on the basis of state of the art scientific knowledge;
- present a final design that is clear, convincing and well-substantiated, using various digital techniques and poster layouts;
- defend and sell his or her viewpoints and conclusions in a professional and representative way and academically correct;
- reflect on his or her personal functioning in a multi-disciplinary team and the functioning of the team in relation to the client, both in an assessment interview and by writing an individual assessment paper;
- assess the contribution of other team-members and other stakeholders on team functioning and execution of project tasks and appropriately reflect on these and give feedback in writing and verbally.

Activities:

- guest lectures by scientists from a relevant range of disciplines (social and natural sciences, philosophy);
- self study and literature research;
- planning and design studios;
- written and verbal presentations;
- assessment papers and interviews;
- international excursion.

Examination:

- presentation, poster and report of group work (25%);
- presentation, poster and report of individual work (50%);
