Assumed knowledge on:

BSc in Landscape Architecture or equivalent background.

Continuation courses:

LAR-60318 Atelier Landscape Architecture and Planning.

Contents:

This course introduces a range of design approaches to new MSc students who did not study landscape architecture in Wageningen before. The aim of the course is to make students aware of different design approaches, and different aspects within these approaches. These aspects will be presented to the students in a polarised way to trigger flexible design thinking and intense common discussion and reflection. The aspects addressed will be: intuitive versus rational design approaches and 'closed' versus 'open' approaches. The students learn these approaches not only through theoretical lectures and reading, but foremost through 'learning by doing'. They experience the design approaches through actually applying them on a site in a studio-like setting, and by comparing and reflecting on the design results together and individually.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- compare similarities and differences between different design approaches;
- apply these design approaches by solving a design problem on a site of medium scale level in intensive design exercises;
- evaluate design approaches on their potentials and appropriateness to solve complex design problems;
- propose a single or combined design approach to creatively solve such problems;
- critically reflect on his or her results of the design assignments.

Activities:

- lectures;
- literature study;
- design exercises;
- writing a short reflection paper.

Examination:

- each design approach translated into individual designs (60%);
- reflection report on approaches and own individual work (40%).

Literature:

The literature will be bundled in a reader according to the latest developments in design approaches.
