Contents:
Information systems in large organizations today are created by using ready development shells. At the core of these shells are techniques for modelling the processes of the organisation, in line with the organizations strategy. The group work will concentrate on Business Process Modelling (BPM). Next to the practical work, the course contains lectures that show the big business picture and the link with other topics in information management and in management in general.
Learning outcomes:
After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- explain why managers need to be knowledgeable about Information Systems and Information Technology;
- identify the key elements that are part of an ICT strategy;
- demonstrate the importance of implementing an ICT strategy within an organisation or supply chain;
- analyse the relations between ICT strategy and business strategy, in particular logistic strategy, customer relationship management and ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning);
- evaluate BPM (Business Process Modelling) in establishing an ICT strategy;
- create a Business Process Model based on a realistic case study;
- demonstrate how SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and cloud computing can enhance flexibility of business operations;
- create a cloud-based implementation of a case using SOA with a state of the art software environment.
Activities:
- take a tutorial on BPM and other techniques using specialized software;
- implement a simplified WU case in that software;
- carry out a case study on BPM for the development for an Information System in a real company;
- individual work on a number of case studies on information systems in organizations and discuss the outcomes in class.
Examination:
- individual assignments (35%);
- group report (50%);
- individual presentation;
- discussion and participation (15%).
Each component needs a minimum mark of 5.0 to pass.
