Language of instruction:

Continuation courses:

Didactic Skills is the first part of the Orientation Program, or the BSc Minor Education, or the BSc Minor Environmental Education.

Contents:

This course focuses on the development of both teaching and communication skills. These skills are necessary for preparing and conducting presentations, colloquia, lessons and workshops. Not only lectures are practised, but also interactive presentations and short workshops. Exercises prepare the students for three short presentations or lessons that students perform for their fellow students. After each presentation or lesson, feedback is provided by both the teacher and the fellow students.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- understand and apply three main didactic methods: presenting, interacting and facilitating group work;
- prepare themselves properly for (scientific) teaching and instructional activities and describe their own preferences for certain didactic methods;
- recognize and apply various skills which enhance teaching and instructional activities, such as communication skills and multimedia skills;
- give constructive feedback on the performance of fellow students and receive feedback on their own performance in front of and within the group and use this feedback for their continuous professional development;
- reflect on the learning experiences during the course, including all learning outcomes as mentioned above;
- apply learning outcomes as mentioned above in a professional setting.

Activities:

The students will analyse their personal experiences with regard to teaching and learning, and formulate personal learning goals based on these experiences. They will give at least three presentations or lessons. They observe the presentation or lessons of fellow students and provide constructive feedback based on these observations.
Students are required to record their learning experiences throughout the course and write a final self-evaluation report about their learning experiences. Also, they will carry out a small project related to teaching, to practice their experiences in a different educational setting. An additional report is written to prove one's learning experiences outside the course.

Examination:

The grade will be based on the quality of:
- the lessons/presentations delivered by the students (5%);
- the self-evaluation report (70%);
- the additional report (25%);
Each of the three components must have a minimum mark of 5.5 to pass.
