Management and Consumer Studies (BBC) / BSc

Introduction

The focus of the BSc Management, Economics and Consumer studies Programme is on the managerial, economic, environmental, and sociological aspects in the production and consumption of food within households and businesses in a sustainable and dynamic environment. Business management, Economics, Sociology and Marketing are the main disciplines from which the central themes are studied. After introductory and intermediate courses the student has to choose one of the two majors. The management major focuses on management processes in (agri-food) business from a strategic, organizational and financial point of view. Within the major Consumer Studies the focus is on household decision-making, buying and consumption behaviour, and communication between consumers and organizations.

Learning Outcomes

After successful completion of this BSc programme graduates are expected to be able to:
- explain concepts, principles, theories and methods of:
* the management studies domain, particularly related to the agri-chain and its environment. (Major Management studies);
* the consumer studies domain, particularly related to the agri-chain and its environment. (Major Consumer studies);
- critically reflect upon his own (research) activities in the field of management and/or consumer studies;
- apply the common research techniques in the field of management and/or consumer studies and has the ability to relate theory to empirical work;
- plan, conduct and present an independent investigation, with reliance on guidance, in the field of management and/or consumer studies, related to the agri-chain and its environment;
- explain the outcomes of his research in order to inform fellow researchers, organizations, consumers and/or the general public;
- apply concepts, principles, theories and methods of:
* the management studies domain on situations the agri-chain, its environment and its actors is faced with (Major A. Management studies);
* the consumer studies domain on situations the agri-chain, its environment and its actors are faced with (Major B. Consumer studies);
- display awareness of the possibility that research topics within the management and/or consumer studies domain(s) can be put subject to more than one approach and may have more than one solution;
- Work in a team, including the ability to make a planning and a distribution of tasks (under supervision);
- Display awareness of the interaction and potential integration between multiple disciplines within the agri-chain and the life sciences environment (e.g. Marketing & Sociology or Communication Studies);
- understand the international and social context of his field of study.
