Contents:

During this individual project the student has to write a detailed research proposal of his/her major thesis subject and to demonstrate to be able to critically analyse, discuss and summarise the chosen subject. The contents of the proposal must address the following points; (i) summary of the proposed research (ii) historical background, scientific approach and problem definitions (objectives), (iii) scientific importance and methodologies, (iv) (statistical) analysis of results, (v) project planning (time versus various objectives/deliverables), (vi) back-up strategies, (vii) cost estimates and (viii) literature references. It is pivotal in this preparation phase that before the onset of the major thesis the student gets familiar with all research methodologies, technologies and computer programmes required for the thesis work. Finally, the research proposal has to be orally presented to members of the chair group. The project will be supervised by a senior staff member of one of the chair groups that provide a thesis in the biology program.

Learning outcomes:

After completing the master thesis proposal a student is expected to be able to:
- clearly and explicitly define (a) research question(s);
- design and write a well substantiated and structured research proposal in which the scientific background involved is described in detail and all practical aspects of the intended research are made explicit i.e. required budget, planning, practical skills and materials;
- give an oral presentation about the research proposal for the chair group.

Activities:

- designing, planning and writing of a detailed research proposal of major thesis subject;
- developing practical experience in using research techniques, methodologies and computer programmes required for the major thesis subject;
- oral presentation of the research proposal.

Examination:

The students performance will be assessed by the supervisor of the project according to a standard evaluation form. Aspects assessed include attitude during the preparation work for the thesis proposal, quality of the written report, and oral presentation of the research proposal.
