Contents:

The core purpose of this course is to get acquainted with various social science methodologies and to be able to apply research methods relevant to leisure and tourism research. Having experience with methods of social scientific methods is a prerequisite to be successful in the ACT case studies, the thesis and probably the internship. We will examine a range of methods that are commonly used to collect, analyze and report on quantitative and qualitative data and consider potential applications for leisure and tourism research.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this course the student is expected to: - have an overview of the purpose of research, the qualities of a good research, types of research, the research process and to be able to critically appraise a research project;
- have an understanding of how choosing a set of methods is related to various steps in the whole research process;
- be able to establish the difference between the terms of: methodology, methods of collecting data and methods of interpreting;
- be able to review and apply the research process in the study domain of leisure, recreation and tourism, and several apply qualitative and quantitative methods in empirical studies;
- understand the different functions of a literature review and be able to conduct literature review;
- be able to apply qualitative data collection by means of in-depth interviews;
- be able to apply qualitative methods of data analysis, such as content analysis and semiotic analysis;
- be able to apply quantitative methods of data collection with a questionnaire;
- understand and apply quantitative methods of data analysis, such as chi-squared analysis, analysis of variance and regression analysis;
- be able to analyze quantitative data with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS);
- be able to write a scientific paper about qualitative or quantitative research, including reflection and interpretation of results.

Activities:

Lectures/discussion, interviewing, data analysis, ICT usage, analytical software tutorials, literature study, group exercises .
