Language of instruction:

Dutch and/or English

Assumed knowledge on:

MAT-11806 Introduction to Statistics or MAT-14303 Basic Statistics

Continuation courses:

HNE-37306 Applied Data Analysis (in Human Nutrition and Health Research)

Contents:

The course will cover several advanced statistical models, designs and techniques. The goals, assumptions, limitations and the use of several different statistical procedures relevant to the nutrition sciences will be discussed. Main topics are: multiple comparisons, categorical data, multiple regression, fixed-effects analysis of variance, analysis of covariance and analysis of variance for some random- and mixed-effects models.

Learning outcomes:

After this course the student is expected to be able to:
- comprehend the basic ideas of statistical inference, experimental design and data collection relevant to human intervention trials and observational studies;
- determine the appropriate statistical procedure, given the description of the experiment, the research question and the type of data;
- carry out the needed analyses for the discussed situations and interpret the results in terms of the problem;
- perform independently the above mentioned data analysis techniques with the computer package SPSS.

Activities:

The course consists of class-work, studying a handbook and (mandatory) practical work using SPSS

Examination:

Written exam; the practical work has to result in a pass.

Literature:

- R. Lymann Ott and Michael Longnecker: Statistical Methods and Data analysis (ISBN 0495109142, 6th edition ).
- A study guide available in English (WUR Shop).
