Assumed knowledge on:

Introduction Atmosphere, Meteorology and Climate

Continuation courses:

Boundary-layer Processes, Atmospheric Dynamics

Contents:

- introduction to the assimilation, processing, analysis and presentation of large amounts of meteorological data, both synoptic and aerological observations as well as model output;
- analysis of the structure of weather systems on the synoptic scale and mesoscale;
- application of the theory to estimate the magnitude of atmospheric quantities;
- analysis and interpretation of model output leading to weather forecasting;
- some simple climatic calculations of quantities and transports on the global scale.

Learning outcomes:

After this course the student is expected to be able to;
- find and recognize and the different types of meteorological data and how often these are available; - manipulate, analyze and interpret these data;
- explain and discuss the relation between several atmospheric quantities varying in space and time.

Activities:

- perform all exercises in a methodical and efficient manner;
- oral and written presentation of the results of some of the exercises.

Examination:

The grade depends on the written material submitted during the course. Important aspects for the grading are: theoretical knowledge, clarity of presentation, interpretation of results, efficiency, self-sufficiency, the student's own initiative and originality.
