Contents:

This course focuses on advanced methods and techniques for research and spatial planning. The course content builds upon the research foundations laid in the Bsc courses on methods and techniques for planning. The course entails a mix of qualitative and quantitative approaches. Traditional empirical research methods and techniques are combined with contemporary case study and situational analysis. Students learn to choose the appropriate methods and techniques in simulated examples and cases from contemporary planning practice. Methods and techniques from the domain of the natural sciences, the social sciences and the humanities will be combined according to the philosophy of spatial planning being a delta discipline.

Learning outcomes:

After this course the student has insight in landscape research, relevant for spatial planning (core competence 5). The student has enhanced his knowledge and skills in interpretative and descriptive research methods The student has fostered a critical attitude in the selection of adequate research tools (including the use of (geo)information systems)

Activities:

(Guest) lectures, practical assignments, case study and self study.

Examination:

Evaluation on the basis of (1) a written evaluation/essay and (2) the results of practical assignments. Both components contribute equally.
