Contents:

This second introductory course deals with core concepts and keywords in contemporary landscape architecture and spatial planning. These will be taught in the context of both in the national and the international domain. The emphasis will be on a selection of words, categories and definitions that will be reflected by the various disciplines that are involved in shaping and planning landscapes or elements within landscapes. The following questions will be answered: - How to define and control forces within changing landscape?
- How do different stakeholder groups in society define landscape and driving forces?
- What is the main objective of science in design, planning and analysis?
- What is the role of art in relation to science?

Learning outcomes:

After this course students are expected to:
- explain the knowledge bases and structure of the study in landscape architecture and spatial planning and their interrelationships;
- be aware of recent developments in the theory of both landscape architecture and planning;
- be able to explain the need and value of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches;
- familiarize with a list of fundamental categories, definitions and themes that are relevant to both architecture and planning. After this course students should have a critical attitude to theory and should be able to value the motives and theories that are relevant to both Landscape Architecture and Planning and be able to distinguish relevant differences between these scientific approaches.

Activities:

A team of lecturers uses a range of didactic means. The students will: - follow introduction lectures; - take part in oral summarizing of the lectures; - take part in critical reflections on the theory.

Examination:

The course includes a written exam by questions in the last week of the period. The exam consists of 4 parts (A, B, C and D) with equal weights. However, throughout the course the teaching staff will also evaluate students for their attitude during the course work (taking part in discussions, summarizing, etc.). This evaluation can be used to upgrade or degrade the final grade.
