Contents:

Focusing on recent issues in landscape architecture in its widest sense this lecture series also seeks links with allied fields. The issues examined annually are topical in nature dealing with themes such as landscape urbanism, water management, infrastructure or metropolitan urbanization. They may also involve philosophical, ethical or sociological themes. According to the respective themes prominent speakers are invited to share their view on the topic.

Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to:
- have an overview of recent developments in Dutch and European landscape architectural practice, inclusive of design research;
- develop an ability to interpret and critically examine the bases of these practices by exercising independent and free reasoning;
- articulate how to deal with diversity in problem perception and conditions, value, social and economic condition;
- know how philosophical (aesthetic and ethical) orientations lead to different kind of design practice and innovations in the field.

Activities:

- attendance of all scheduled lectures and participation in the discussions that follow them;
- submission of a written report on one of these lectures on the basis of guidelines provided before the start of the series;
- reading literature on the subject of the lectures;
- writing an essay on the subject covered in the same lectures.

Examination:

Overall assessment of students will be based on the following items in the proportions indicated;
- attendance at lectures and participation in the subsequent discussions;
- class presentation;
- the essay (50% of total).
