Contents:

After the instruction of the basics of design in Design Studio I and theoretical principles for design and aesthetics in Theory and Aesthetics, the implementation of design principles on a concrete location is learned in an intensive studio.
Landscape architects have the task of shaping a functioning, sustainable and pleasing environment, of making a place where human beings can dwell. Within the context of a technical assignment they have to shape a surrounding where people can feel at home. Their plans are always situated in a wider context that influences the site and inspires the designer. This studio deals with site design in an existing context on a location selected from a discrete set of options (the program for the design could be a park or graveyard). The aim is to get to know and apply the fundamentals of site design, using various techniques and materials and getting acquainted to the critical use of information sources.
Knowledge acquired in the courses Landscape Engineering and Planting and Construction are to be united in a convincing design. The design process consists of the following steps 1. surveying of the site and the context, analyzing aspects of site and program by fieldtrips and map studies and reference studies;
2. developing various design models on possible interventions, that are argued for and can be discussed;
3. developing a plan for the site in form, dimensions and materials;
4. constructive elaboration;
5. visualizing a presentation;
6. verbally presenting the design.;
The scale of the design is 1:10.000 for the research of site and context, 1:1.000-1:500 for the final design and 1: 100-1:10 for details.

Learning outcomes:

After this course students are expected to have developed skills to;
- get acquainted with and critically evaluate sites, contexts and programs;
- systematically develop a plan that addresses site and program;
- present and discuss the developed plan.

Examination:

The design studio will be assessed on the basis of the intermediate assignments completed and combined in a portfolio, an adequately motivated design and a presentation of that design convincingly both graphically and verbally.
