Contents:

The course offers building blocks and techniques, applied in the related Design Studio 3. This includes: a. basic insights and knowledge in contemporary methods of application of living materials, in landscape design, in relationship to ecosystems, health-issues and energy production; b. learning about materials: natural stone, brick, concrete, types of wood, metals and synthetic materials, and c. applied drawing exercises on building constructions of outdoor architectural elements: pavements, steps and stairs, walls, weirs, camp shots, decks, foot bridges, pergolas, screens, exemplified by best practices

Learning outcomes:

After this course students will have the knowledge, tools and skills to:
- know and apply in design a selection of perennial and woody plants and their architectural qualities and growing conditions over time;
- know and apply in design a selection of hard construction materials; interpret their qualities and applications for landscape design, and produce drawings on basic construction and detail.

Activities:

- lectures, literature study and advanced exercises;
- supervised composition of planting plans;
- supervised design and drawing of fundamental constructions and details.

Examination:

- written and drawn examination on the material covered;
- results of various exercises.
