Language of instruction:

Dutch

Assumed knowledge on:

CBI-10306 Cell Biology

Continuation courses:

HAP-21303 Integrated Human Physiology

Contents:

Basic principles of physiology; Homeostasis, thermoregulation, osmoregulation, pH regulation, excretion, respiration, endocrinology. Form (anatomy), function and regulation of the main human organs and organ systems; Nervous system (brain, nerves, bioelectricity), respiratory system (lung and respiration), cardiovascular system (heart and vessels, ECG, blood pressure, blood composition), gastrointestinal and metabolic system (digestion and metabolism), motor system (muscle), sensory system (vision, smell, taste, touch), endocrine system (glands), urogenital system (kidney, reproductive organs), connective tissue (huid, bot, vet). The focus is on human form and function and regulation at the level of the cell, tissue and organism. Some principles are demonstrated using dead-born animals.

Learning outcomes:

After this course students have basic knowledge on:
- basic terms and principles of human physiology;
- structural organization and functioning of human organ systems;
- basic regulation of human organ systems;
- the interaction of form and function;
- techniques to collect basic data on respiratory system, cardiovascular system, sensory system, digestive system, skin, bone.

Activities:

Lectures, practicals (physiological, histological, morphological (dissection), biochemical), self-study (book, articles).

Examination:

Computer examination.

Literature:

Handouts of the lectures, a syllabus of the practicals and chapters from: Stanfield CL, Principles of Human Physiology, Fourth Edition (2010). Pearson Benjamin Cummings.
