Contents:

This course offers a deeper insight into the practical field of economics in forest and nature conservation and it's theoretical implications. Based on the finding of immense human influence of economic entities (course FNP-21306) on natural resources, for this course the analysis, understanding and application of individual decision-making in relation to the (mis)use and protection of natural resources will form the central topic of the course.
Appropriate description, understanding and explanation of typical decision-making processes and its results are seen as both the base of future developments in NRM related theory and (practical) application. European, as well as international examples in NRM, will serve as examples to reflect on related theory and practice. While actors (states, organizations, enterprises, individuals) in different decision-making frameworks (resource types, management goals, regions) will differ, economics as a common language for all these problems will be tested.

Learning outcomes:

After the course students will be able to:
- understand the theoretical and practical field of economics in forest and nature conservation;
- describe and understand the most important topics of this field and their specific guise and limitations in forest and nature conservation;
- analyse and frame current issues in natural resource management and conservation according to recent theoretical findings in economics;
- apply basic skills in normative management in relation to natural resource decision making.

Activities:

- preparing for and attending lectures;
- practical with small assignments;
- individual/group assignment;
- self-study.

Examination:

The student's final mark for this course will be based on:
- the results of the assignment given during the course;
- the result of a written examination with open end questions.
