Contents:

The course offers an introduction into the interrelationships between forest, nature and society. Forest and nature have several values and functions for society, while society obviously has an impact on forest and nature in turn. These impacts range from deforestation to nature conservation. And values and functions of forest and nature range from beauty and relaxation to natural resources for development. This course will offer a comprehensive framework to understand these interrelationships, taking several sectors of society (state, market, civil society), various actor groups (policy makers, people, NGOs, firms) and various nature values and functions (ecological, social, economic) as a starting point. Topics will be, amongst others, forest history in the Netherlands, the forest sector, nature images of people and experts, approaches in nature management of various organizations and forest and nature conservation policy. Presenting academic materials and results is part of the course.

Learning outcomes:

After the course, students: - have gained basic knowledge on the interrelationships between forest, nature and society;
- are able to reflect on this issue empirically as well as theoretically and;
- can connect ecological and technical aspects of forest and nature management to social ones.

Activities:

Besides lectures, the course includes literature study, practicals, excursions and project work.

Examination:

Exam, project report and presentation of results.
