Contents:
In this course the ecology and management of different forest resources are the central topics. Based on knowledge of forest ecosystems, conditions for ecological sustainability are derived in relation to forest conservation, use and sylvicultural systems.
Different forest resources are described, covering the main forest biomes of the world. Special emphasis is given to wood. From each forest type the following aspects are dealt with: the relation between forest type and site conditions, forest dynamics and associated disturbances, historical resource use, environmental functions, biodiversity and future threats.
For a sustainable management and use of forest resources an introduction is given into the possible silvicultural interventions and systems.
Learning outcomes:
At the end of this course, the student is expected to be able to:
- describe the most important forest resources of the world in terms of their structure and productivity in relation to site conditions, their dynamics and disturbance regime, their historical and current use, and the main threats to sustainability of forest use in these forest resources;
- describe and distinguish the main silvicultural systems applied worldwide, in relation to forest type and sustainability of forest use;
- write a short essay assignment on the relation between ecology, silvicultural system, and sustainability of use of forest resources.
Activities:
- lectures;
- essay assignment writing;
- excursions;
- practical work.
Examination:
- written examination (80%);
- assignment (20%).
Literature:
A lecture-reader, which can be bought at the beginning of the course. For further information, visit the course web-site.
