Language of instruction:

Dutch and/or English

Continuation courses:

Integrated Ecosystem Assessment in Regional Management (MSc); Environmental Assessment for Pollution Management (MSc)

Contents:

During the bachelor thesis students will apply knowledge on environmental issues and environmental assessments and present the results of their analysis. Because of the complexity of environmental issues, environmental assessments need to be based on a systematic analysis of the problem at stake (as discussed during the course ESA-81303). Students will, individually, write a state-of-of-the-art summary paper on a relevant topic, on the basis of information from scientific literature or a short systems analysis. The topic will be selected by the student in collaboration with the course coordinator, and may focus on integrated environmental assessment as well as environmental quality (e.g. water soil or air pollution, or toxicology). The results will be presented through an oral presentation to other students and university staff, during a bachelors' seminar.

Learning outcomes:

After this course (individual assignment) students are expected to be able to:
- explore the background of a given research problem by critically reviewing scientific literature;
- perform research according to a project proposal;
- write a state-of the-art, well structured summary paper at the level of a scientific conference paper on an environmental issue, on the basis of information from scientific literature; using adequate wording and presenting results in a clear way using tables and figures;
- prepare and give a structured, clear and concise presentation on the results of the analysis at a conference attended by an audience with a general knowledge on environmental sciences.

Activities:

Students write a paper, and prepare a symposium (poster and/or oral) presentation of an integrated environmental assessment and present the results during the closing bachelors' seminar.

Examination:

Based on the paper and the presentation.

Literature:

A course manual is available.
