Contents:
This course focuses both on major theoretical concepts of environmental governance in multi-level systems and on policy-oriented perspectives that aim to address existing environmental problems. It provides students with knowledge on (i) the development of environmental institutions and ideas, (ii) relevant policy-making concepts and governance models and (iii) different forms of environmental regulation, which result from the changing roles of state, market and civil society actors. The course starts with a broad overview on the institutionalization and the key concepts of environmental policy. The second part of the course concentrates on the basic approaches to environmental governance, and the third part focuses on different environmental issues from a multilevel perspective (international, European, national, sub national).
Learning outcomes:
After this course the students are able to:
- identify and to reproduce different policy theories and theories on environmental governance;
- apply these different theories to describe and analyse environmental problems and developments in environmental policies;
- analyse and evaluate environmental policy at different stages and levels.
Activities:
This course is writing-intensive and thus based on a variety of assignments: summaries of articles, paper outline, paper draft, final paper, presentation of the paper in class, participation in peer response workshops.
