Teaching as a profession is a follow-up to the Didactic Skills course. The main difference is that students now apply their didactic skills in a real-life situation, either in a Secondary School or in one of the institutes for Professional Education (HBO).
Learning outcomes:
After completing the course, students are expected to:
- have gained practical knowledge and experience of current teaching practices;
- have gained insight in important teaching skills by observing experienced teachers;
- can describe models for teaching and learning which are used in contemporary education;
- can apply some of these skills in the classroom, like actively involve students in the learning process;
- are able to make subject matter or course content transparent and accessible for the students;
- are able to make clear to students what they are expected to do and to answer their questions properly;
- are able to maintain order in the classroom (to a certain degree);
- can adequately use audio-visual aids;
- are able to reflect upon their classroom experiences and draw conclusions from these to improve their performance.
Activities:
The students have to write a proposal (including learning objectives based on former experiences) and participate in supportive meetings. The students have to perform the activities described in the proposal, carry out observation assignments and will participate in a number of teaching activities. Throughout the course students reflect on their personal experiences by writing a logbook and a final reflection paper.
Examination:
The grade will be based on the quality of the proposal (at the start of the course), on the input during the meetings and the internship and on the quality of the final report.
