Assumed knowledge on:
Flora and Fauna of the Netherlands (BIS-10306), Evolution and Systematics (GEN-11306)
Contents:
A two week field course in southern France (eastern Pyrenees), where a range of sites are visited to study plants and insects, as a follow-up of the Flora and Fauna of the Netherlands course in the first year (BIS-10306). Plants and animals will be collected in the field and studied during the practicals.
Learning outcomes:
The student is expected to be able to:
- recognize most of the European plant families and genera, and animal orders and families;
- demonstrate knowledge on the phylogenetic relationships of these organisms;
- demonstrate knowledge on the relationships of these organisms with their environment;
- identify plants and animals using sources written in Dutch and other languages.
Activities:
Daily excursions, followed by practical work identifying and studying the collected material.
Examination:
A test on the ability to recognize a number of plant and animal taxa, and a written examination on the theoretical information given in the manual and during expositions in the field.
The botanical and zoological part will be examined separately. The total mark will be the average of the botanical and zoological exams, but a mark lower than 4.6 for either the botanical or the zoological part cannot be compensated by the other part.
Literature:
Syllabi for the botanical and zoological parts of the course will be sold at a prepatory meeting to be held several weeks before the field course (attendance obligatory).
