Contents:

In the field of environmental research besides disciplinary knowledge also interdisciplinary knowledge is needed. In this course the focus is on interdisciplinary knowledge within pedosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere and atmosphere. Interdisciplinary topics will be discussed and it will be shown how disciplinary knowledge can be used. The course is divided into two parts. During the first part (5 weeks) lectures, literature study and tutorials will be given about themes at different spatial scale levels like global carbon cycle, effect of landuse on atmospheric and landscape processes, interactions between rivers and floodplain soils, climate, soil (water) and vegetation interaction, terrestrial and aquatic effects on nitrogen cycle. In the second part (3 weeks) an individual paper about an interdisciplinary topic has to be written and presented. The individual paper will be a review of a paper selected from a list of interdisciplinary papers. Finally presentations of the papers within a theme will be given.

Learning outcomes:

After this course, students are expected to be able to:
- outline the research fields within the MSc Earth and Environment and the connections between them;
- understand interactions between different spheres (hydrosphere, pedosphere, biosphere and atmosphere);
- analyze articles (academic attitude) with interdisciplinary topics;
- evaluate disciplinary knowledge within interdisciplinary topics ;
- apply obtained knowledge through writing a review (paper) about an interdisciplinary topic;
- present a review (individual) paper.

Activities:

Active participation in lectures and tutorials, critical reading articles, data analysis, writing reports, writing review of an article, present review.

Examination:

Active participation, written reports, individual paper (review) and presentation.

Literature:

Reader with articles.
