Language of instruction:

In this course students make a design for a spatial operational plan (focussing on execution) on a local scale. The plan must solve the present spatial problems in the area. In this course the students have to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills from previous courses. The students are confronted with a vision for the future of the area, which consistently has to be operationalized in the successive phases of the course. The main phases are (1) analysis of patrons and processes; (2) a first proposal for a spatial plan; (3) a further elaboration of arrangement and construction for a part of the area; (4) calculation of impacts and an economic evaluation of the measures proposed. Those phases are finished with oral and written presentations, including maps.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- collect knowledge on the natural and social sciences to analyze the spatial organization of activities on local scale;
- apply methods and techniques for operational planning in a project on local scale;
- develop operational plans to solve social, economic and ecological problems;
- develop and present an operational plan at the local scale for a selected area with a high degree of complexity, within a specific social and physical context and given a specific planning task;
- develop plans for infrastructure networks, including solutions to mitigate environmental impacts;
- analyze the consequences of alternative choices for different stakeholders in society;
- prepare and give an oral presentation on a planning project;
- express an opinion;
- work in a team.

Practical assignments (individual as well as in groups of 2 or 4), written, oral and poster presentations, field excursion (participation is obligatory).

The personal evaluation is based on a weighted average of the student's individual and group results in the phases (1)..(4).

A reader will be available at the start of the course.
