Contents:

This practical course is an in-depth planning methodology course, focusing at methods and techniques to support operational planning problems at local scale level. Students gain knowledge and skills with applying methods and techniques for qualitative and quantitative analyses of land use and landscape, including bio-physical and environmental aspects as well as socio-economical aspects. The course familiarizes the students with concepts for structuring spatial analysis and spatial coherence, and a variety of assessment techniques. The methods and techniques will be applied in several case studies related to agriculture, nature, recreation and tourism, traffic analysis, spatial-environmental conflicts, and demography.

Learning outcomes:

After successful completion of this course students are expected to be able to:
- compare different methods and techniques for operational planning;
- assess advantages and disadvantages of methods and techniques for operational planning;
- distinguish and select planning methods and techniques in the context of a planning task on the local scale;
- analyse the spatial distribution and properties of landscapes, as a result of landscape transformation processes at the local scale;
- recognize the role of different maps;
- apply statistical knowledge for landscape, land use and spatial analysis.

Activities:

Lectures, practical exercises and writing short reports.

Examination:

Evaluation of the practical exercises / reports.

Literature:

Special written reader + additional literature.
